Telluride Historical Museum Write Up on the Swede Finn Hall

Built in 1899, Swede Finn Hall is typical of 19th Century social halls.  The original floor emphasizes a large meeting room, suitable for community gatherings such as holiday parties, meetings and weekend dances.  Note the stereotypical Western false front, intended to give the hall a sense of grandeur.  Otherwise, the detail is simple, including a modified dentil pattern over the windows and doors and a pediment over the front door.  The roof was initially flat, but eventually became a gable for more effective snow shedding.  Inside, there is a stage and a simple plank ceiling.

The Swede-Finns were Swedes who were born in Southern Finland near the Swedish border.  Many of them spoke only Swedish, not Finnish.  Their community was located on the western end of West Pacific Street, near Finn Town Flats.

A major renovation of the Swede Finn Hall occurred in 1992.
